I am a thirty-something-year old female and started getting migraines in July of 2007. Every day. They started out with severe vertigo and vomiting...that took the doctors (I saw my PCP, then an ENT, then a neurologist) a while to diagnose as migraines. One long eight week migraine!
Now over a year later, I am still on an active journey to discover what works and what doesn't; both medicinally and with my lifestyle choices.
My parents (who've never had migraines) have four children. Three of the four have migraines.
Lifestyle Actions I'm taking on my own to help decrease my migraines
1. Getting enough cardio to help with stress
2. Increasing muscle tone in my lower trapezius muscles (takes tension off the top of my shoulders)
3. Yoga (it decreased neck tension for me)
4. Decreasing negative self-talk
5. Neck Traction and Exercises
6. Drinking enough water
7. Getting Enough Sleep (for me, I found nine hours to work...I used to get 6-7)
Medication I've taken for Migraines
1. Migranal (abortive drug): I highly recommed this
2. Metoclopramide (anti-nausea)
3. Three Aspirin (325mg each)
4. Prednisone (for refractory migraine)
5. Birth Control, continuing dose (no placebo week)
6. Lexapro (SSRI--didn't do much, difficult to get off of though: two months of constant headache but didn't need it)
7. Topamax (seizure drug, worked well, got off because of side effects)
8. Imitrex (abortive drug)
Vitamins, Herbs and Supplements my neurologist has prescribed. I no longer use them.
